PhD Candidate: Mathematical Optimization for Intermodal Logistics (SnT × Eurosender)
Luxembourg,
Luxembourg
Why this role matters
Eurosender and SnT are joining forces on a RDI project to design the next generation of intermodal booking systems — integrating rail and road transport into a single platform that optimizes cost, speed, and environmental impact. As a PhD researcher, you will contribute to the scientific backbone of this effort, developing new optimization algorithms and modelling frameworks that make large-scale, CO₂-aware logistics decisions possible in real time. Your work won’t stay on paper: it will be validated on real datasets and linked directly to Eurosender’s digital logistics platform, creating visible impact in industry.
Your responsibilities
- Develop mathematical optimization models (e.g., MIP/ILP, heuristics, metaheuristics) for intermodal networks.
- Investigate machine learning–enhanced optimization methods for routing and scheduling.
- Design a multi-objective optimization framework balancing cost, time, and emissions.
- Conduct scalability studies using representative logistics datasets.
- Publish and present research results at top international venues.
- Work closely with Eurosender engineers to validate results in a real platform environment.
Your profile
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong background in optimization, operations research, or algorithms.
- Experience with programming languages commonly used in optimization and data science (e.g., Python, Julia, Java, or C++).
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of logistics systems or emissions modelling.
- Experience with graph databases, ML frameworks, or quantum optimization techniques.
What we offer
- Enrollment as a full-time PhD student at the University of Luxembourg.
- Opportunity to work in a world-class ICT research centre (SnT) with access to top-tier infrastructure.
- A collaborative project with direct impact on European logistics innovation, in close partnership with Eurosender.
